GURJEET SINGH; A LOT TO TELL!
Gurjeet Singh is a Chandigarh-based artist born in 1994 in Algon Kothi, Punjab. He went on to receive his BFA and then MFA from the Government College of Art, Chandigarh. Singh first learned stitching techniques from observing his elder sisters embroidering and sewing at home. Singh’s creations come to life through the application of discarded fabric scraps, defected plastic toys, broken beads, buttons, ghungroos, strings of pearls, and sofa upholsteries. His deep connection to discarded materials is a reflection of his own journey—overlooked and cast-off while growing up as a queer man in rural Punjab. Singh presented his first solo show in India at Chemould CoLab in 2022, exhibited at the Museum of Art and Photography Bangalore, the British Textile Biennale; he has received awards and grants including the KHOJ Support Grant, Scholarship from Punjab Lalit Kala Akademi, and the Inlaks Fine Art Award, amongst others.
